A FILM BY PEABODY AWARD-WINNING FILM MAKER, DENNIS DOUGHERTY

“TR Ritchie: An American Songwriter”

A celebration of the life and music of the late, great award-winning recording artist, poet and touring musician…

“…I had a brilliant but terrible idea…” wrote film maker and long time TR friend, Dennis Dougherty seven months after TR passed. Dennis had just spent countless hours editing footage of the January 18th, 2014 concert, where musician friends from all over the country gathered to sing some of their favorite TR songs for him, just 11 days before his death. It was a stunning tribute, not only to TR’s music, but to the strong connections he forged during his more than 4 decades as a one-of-a-kind, extraordinarily gifted troubadour poet.

The “terrible” part was that the nearly completed concert film had given Dennis the inspiration to go through miles of tape he had shot of their travels over many years. That took a while. The “brilliant” part was that Dennis had unearthed the interviews, captured on road and field trips. These are never-before-seen nuggets of charm, wisdom and philosophy that would lend more of a sense of who the man was. He added “It will be well worth the wait and a monument to a true artist.”

It was indeed worth the wait. Dennis’ documentary brings the picture more clearly into focus, this amazing human being that was TR Ritchie…songwriter, poet, visual artist, tinker and thinker, keen observer of nature and beings, friend and brother, uncle, son and sweetheart.

WILD HORSES REVIEWED
Going from busking at Pike Street Market to kicking it at Kerrville, Napa and Walnut Valley, this unreconstructed folkie sounds like the folk music we’d have been listening to all along if Alice’s Restaurant hadn’t become a hit. Ritchie writes, plays and sings with heart and conviction and an innocence that you wouldn’t expect from someone that’s been around a few rough and competitive blocks. A dreamer with at least seven toes on the ground, Ritchie is a very solid link on a very solid folkie chain that somehow manages to command your attention without demanding it. Killer stuff.  – CHRIS SPECTOR, Editor & Publisher  MIDWEST RECORD
